NEW ARTS SPACE O! GALLERY STUDIO 87-91 Saltmarket, Glasgow; Mon—Sat 11am—5pm. qgallery.org
The 0! Gallery, Glasgow’s first venture dedicated to showcasing the work of queer artists, is to open a new arts space next door to its current location on the Saltmarket. Opening on 19 April, the Studio is intended for use in a holistic manner, with yoga groups and community talks as welcome as visual art exhibitions and theatre events. It will be run in conjunction with the Arts Practice, a new creative organisation directed by Jean Cameron, formerly of the CCA, and project manager of Scotland’s
2005 Venice Biennale exhibition.
The move comes as GALA Scotland, the charity that runs Glasgay! and the 0! Gallery, secures three years’ funding from Glasgow City Council. The money will allow the organisation to strengthen its base and plan ahead with security. For six months of the year, the Studio will be curated by GALA, and for the other six months, by the Arts Practice. Isabel Nolan, an Irish painter, will be the space’s first inhabitant, as part of the contemporary visual arts festival Glasgow International.
Minimalist in appearance, the room features an oak floor, white walls and ceiling, and neon strip lighting inspired by Dan Flavin. GALA chief Steven Thomson describes the Studio as a blank canvas: ‘Our new mission statement is to broaden out the type of work we do - not just running an art gallery. The 0! Gallery has regular exhibitions, but it doesn’t lend itself to being upheaved for performances. What we wanted to do with the Studio was to create a contemporary space. Being open-plan, it not only offers itself to exhibitions but allows itself to be developed into a small performance space - we can offer unique, “boutique” performances.’
