EXHIBITION THE GREATEST FAIRYTALE
City Art Centre, Edinburgh, until Sun 23 Apr 0000
The days of dry old exhibitions filled with stained parchments and dusty artefacts are officially over. Today’s children know the meaning of the word ‘interactive’, and they won‘t be happy unless they get same. If it moves, makes a noise or, best of all, you can touch it, then generally speaking you'll keep little ones happy.
Designed by New York exhibition specialists, Ralph Appelbaum Associates, The Greatest Fairytale celebrates the life and work of prolific author, Hans Christian Andersen. Grasping your ‘Activity Book’, you work your way across four floors, stamping the passport page (Andersen was a great traveller), making paper cut-outs to project onto a wall, and inventing your own fairytale characters based on Andersen’s original creations. Or you can chill out in the comfy corner and listen to recorded stories.
Most popular of all are two sections devoted to hands-on arts and crafts, replete with paper, glue, stickers and sparkly things galore. Much thought has gone into this area, with children invited to make up their own fairytales, create masks and storybooks, and dress up as characters from Andersen’s books. For maximum enjoyment, adults need either a child in tow, or a great love of Andersen’s work. Kids just need their imagination. (Kelly Apter)
