In 2003 Curtis Jackson, under his 50 Cent moniker, released his best selling
album Get Rich or Die Tryin’. In true gangsta rap tradition, Spike Lee condemned the album as a new nadir for black culture. His ire was aimed at the unapologetic celebration of gun culture and the ‘bling bling’ lifestyle. Fiddy batted down these accusations, arguing that he was only singing about life as he knew it and, even more importantly in a culture that celebrates authenticity, he has nine bullet wounds to prove it. Since then he has managed to persuade Irish filmmaker Jim My Left Foot Sheridan to bring his story to screen. Unfortunately this is a just another poor attempt by a musician to sell more albums.
