corner For as long as I can remember there have been puppets basrcally thrown onto a moving bandwagon. in an attempt to catch onto a new fad in mUSIC. From boy bands to dance bands, rock bands to girl bands. the record company moguls have turned them out. Sometimes on more than one occasion. Check out the career of Frank Farian. Although the female members of Boney M could sing. the male Singer/dancer always lip Synched to the voice of Frank Farian. Oops. he did it again in the much publicrsed 805 public stoning of Milli Vanilli, who were too busy getting their hair done to actually sing on their album. Unfortunately. this incessant ridiculing lead to one of the members hanging himself.
In the 903 we had Blackbox riding on time with their model miming on Top of the Pops to a Jocelyn Brown sample until the soul diva intervened and took the royalties she rightly deserved. Many 905 acts were thrown together to front the sounds of a producer ~ don't get me started on the Stock, Aitken and Waterman thread. More recently we have had McFIy and Busted (RIP), bands who -— let's face -- probably spend more time at the stylist than they do writing songs. One thing that has so far remained untouched seems to be the singer/songwriter genre. You cannot take the talents of KT Tunstall. Anthony and the Johnsons. Jack Johnson et at. We. and them, have to reluctantly thank David Gray for paying the way for the singer/songwriter category. l‘m sure they Wlll buy him a drink.
