Gossip, chat and rumour from the gallery floor
I Glasgow City Council, the National Art Collection Fund and Glasgow businessman Willie Haughey recently acquired LS Lowry’s Cranes and Ships - Glasgow Docks for the city, at a cost of £198,400. The painting was unveiled last month at the Museum of Transport, and will eventually be moved to the new Riverside Museum (opening at the end of 2008), sited further down the Kelvin where the river meets the Clyde.
I Rolf Harris unveiled an official portrait of the Queen (pictured) in December. Initial sketches of ‘The Queen' made HRH look like a ‘butcher from Norfolk', according to the artist. Some critics have found the squat, garish. impressionistic portrait a turkey, while others found it bootiful.
I The Tramway has commissioned Toby Paterson, Becks Futures 2002 winner, to create a permanent artwork at the main doorway into the main gallery, Tramway 2. The artist will work with Nord Architects, developing his concerns with modernist architecture. Webster will join the ranks of Edouard Paollozi (his doors open into the main gallery space at the Hunterian Museum) and Nicki de Saint Phalle (mosaic over the door of GoMA), who have also created famous doorways and architectural interventions in Glasgow.
I Cumbernauld Town Centre has won Prospect magazine's Carbuncle Award for 2005. The prize. a plook on a plinth. goes to the late modernist monstrosity deigned by a group of architects led by Hugh Wilson (the first phase of building completed in 1967 under Geoffrey Copcutt). The original brief sought to generate a ‘happy and gracious way of life’, but all evidence (crumbling grey concrete) points to the contrary.
