Music editor Mark Robertson and The List's music critics say what floated their boats in 2006.
Bloc Party
As far as albums of the year went, it was a three-way wrestling match that united the obscuro-snobs and hardened indie kids for once. Few records like Kanye West’s Late Registration united all comers and it was irritating that he declared he was the best thing in hip hop because, well, he was right. Funeral by Arcade Fire also united the office under a beacon of stellar songwriting, albeit of a very different kind. The third top dog had to be Bloc Party with Silent Alarm, which swung back into favour despite a summer of relentless over- exposure.
King Creosote's Rocket DIY and KC Fin/es OK were both stormers and Sufjan Stevens continued a run of nothing short of excellent psych folk madness with Illinois. Similarly, Devandra Banhart, who made the album of his career in Cripple Crow and Anthony and the Johnson's/ Am a Bird Now also deserved all the slavering it induced.
Some things were predictably good. Boards of Canada’s Campfire Headphase, Common’s Be and Wodds Apart by . . . Trail of Dead continued a run of quality output while Cut Copy, LCD Soundsystem, Tom Vek, Spoon, the White Stripes, System of a Down, Lightning Bolt, Girls Aloud, Josh Rouse, Brakes, Richmond Fontaine and Sons and Daughters all deserve honourable mentions.
On the live music front, Arcade Fire at the GUU and Princess Street Gardens. Pixies at Meadowbank and the White Stripes' residency at Carling Academy all set collected heather alight. while Mogwai's show at Mono and Bonnie ‘Prince' Billy at the Queen's Hall were said to make grown men weep. Similarly. New Order at T in the Park. the Fence Homegame and Jason Ringberg at Beltadrum Festival were all outstanding. Any show by the 19908. Desalvo or Mammal this year made us foam at the mouth and those with a good memory. get all warm at the thought of the Killers. Kaiser Chiefs, Futureheads and Bloc Party hogging one bill on the NME tour back in January. Which seems like a very long time ago now . . .
