Europe and Japan, literally clowning around as part of the Natural Theatre Company from Bath, he has closely examined the whole tears of a tragic clown thing to the minutest of detail, infusing it into his own act. ‘I liked the tragic element about the central character, a sad bloke with no friends, so has to make them up. The greatest clowns have that melancholy about them - Hancock, Tommy Cooper - and I try to play that up in the show. Hopefully when I’m standing there crying when everything has gone wrong, the audience will be laughing. I should say that I’m not quite as sad as I appear in stage.’ For Seymour Mace, the happy days are here again. (Brian Donaldson)
