Name DJ MK
Occupation Roots Manuva decksmith.
CV The fact that he‘s been the touring DJ for Rodney Smith — the London hip hop innovator far more widely known as Roots Manuva — since he released Brand New Second Hand in 1999 really should be enough to sell you on MK. Anyone who needs further convincing, however, will be pleased to hear that he's one of the UK's premier scratch and hip hop turntablists. with his early career as a purveyor of fine mix tapes (back in the days before you could even burn a CD) and finer pirate radio shows for stations like Itch FM leading to his current gig, with a regular Thursday night slot on Kiss FM. Since then plenty of legitimate mix CD and production work has come his way. and he's also partially responsible for finding the newest waves of deckbound talent as a longstanding judge on both the UK DMC and World DMC judging panels. Add that to the fact that he plays out alongside Shortee Blitz, Mr Thing and Harry Love as part of the Extended Players crew, and you can be sure of a forward-thinking set from someone who's placed at the very heart of the UK hip hop scene.
Any further business? Yep, MK's also the first guest of Freakmenoovers' weekly Sunday night residency at the newly refurbished Cathouse. Taking over the first level for a night subtitled the Sunday Soundsystem, the club's originators Dema and Nice promise the finest in new and classic hip hop. as we've come to expect from them.
And the Edinburgh date? Hitting Thursday night urban hangout Ghetto Fabulous, the no pretensions R&B and hip hop shindig alongside Paul N‘jie as part of Beat 106’s Love Beat Weekends tour. (David Pollock)
I MK is appearing at Ghetto Fabulous, Cabaret Voltaire, Edinburgh, Thu 70 Nov. and at Freakmenoovers: The Sunday Soundsystem, Cathouse. Glasgow, Sun 13 Nov.

This month at Mish Mash is the first time Lois will perform the track live. ‘It probably wouldn’t have been my automatic thing to be entering the fray again with a disco record but I’m delighted with the way it has turned out and I’m delighted with the response it’s been getting,’ says Fullone. Plaudits include Tiga, who says: ‘I love this song, it’s a classic house record.’ And Craig Richards of Fabric sums up the sound beautifully: ‘This has gay 80s New York all over it. Superb.’ (Sandra Marron)
