The media coverage of the Fringe this year seemed obsessed with how the terrorist events of 7 July would bring back the political into comedians’ sets. The former Mary Whitehouse Experience comic Robert Newman, who was there with his show Apocalypso Now, has been performing political material since he started doing stand-up and pours scorn on anyone who attempted to shoehorn comments on the London bombs into an otherwise
non-political set.
‘I think you’re already lost if you feel any pressure from the press about what you include in your set. If you’re taking your agenda from corporate media then it’s over before it’s begun.’ Though the press coverage did highlight the distinct lack of truly political comedians on the circuit these days, Newman is one of the few and ponders why. ‘A few years ago we were told it was the end of history and the ideological battles were over but it’s the same whoever is in government, sometimes worse. Labour can do things that the Tories can’t; the Tories couldn’t introduce tuition fees as they would have incited riots but Labour can and get enough journalists in the liberal broadsheets to say they are only doing this for the common good.’
Of all the significant mistakes of the Labour government, the war in Iraq is one that preoccupies Newman in Apocalypso Now and leads him into the issue of the rapid depletion of fossil fuels. ‘lt’s not getting mentioned and it’s really interesting doing that bit of material because you hear ears prick up.’ But whatever his message, he always leaves it to people to make their own minds up. ‘I remember Mick Jones of the Clash saying in an early interview we’re not going to evangelise: people will either get what they get
