Beat 106’s underground ambassador Mash gives the lowdown.
Leftfield culture seems to be making a more mainstream turn. The underground seems to be making a move overground. Check out recent Mercury Music Prize winner Anthony & the Johnsons. The guy has unmistakable talent, has a completely unique sound and is probably more surprised than everyone else that he won. He has taken a pounding in the tabloids because he looks like “a borstal dinner lady' etc. but what the media can't understand is how he beat favourites like Kaiser Chefs and KT Tunstall. He was an underdog hero with plaudits from peOpIe like Lou Reed and even Optimo's Twitch all singing his praise. I saw Anthony (first name terms) last time he played in Glasgow and he was truly amazing. He was very unassuming and humbly seemed surprised that so many people had come out to see him. He is playing at the Carling Academy ! soon and if you feel open minded
and seek something completely different make sure you check him out. His sound is not for everyone though, with a lot of people not understanding (ie the British
tabloids for one). Advocates of
the underground are having to
delve even deeper underground
to seek out new styles and artists. which is forcing people to search wider and dig in those crates. I
am in two minds though as I feel
with the advent of file sharing and iPods that people are exposed to
new styles of music nowadays
and the charts are in a far
healthier state because of it. Apart from that Crazy Frog. I can't wait
for his Anthony & the Johnsons
cover.
