It honestly isn‘t just the melting charm of his French accent that gives rise to the wish for an interview with the RSNO’s recently appointed Music Director to go on for much longer than is usual. Stephane Deneve really, really is charming, ambitious and passionate about his new job — and a fantastic conductor. Anyway, the next morning flit out of his Paris apartment in preparation for the move to Glasgow means that he probably should be allowed to get on with his packing. With additional trips to Houston, Milan, Washington and Gothenburg to fit in between now and Christmas, he’ll need a capacious suitcase, as orchestral scores alone will
take up rather a large space in it.
The scores destined to be heard in Scotland will be among the biggest. Beethoven’s Symphony No 9, The Choral, and Debussy’s hauntingly beautiful and only opera, Pelle'as et Mélisande, appear in Deneve’s first couple of weeks. They are very much his programming, the Debussy and its world class line—up of soloists representing his dream choice. But the remainder of the season, whether or not with Deneve as conductor, also
bears his stamp.
‘I felt a little bit like a child in a toy shop‘, he says, ‘but I decided to be the most eclectic I could. All the pieces I adore.’ It is a colourful collection that sees the 33 year—old Deneve do Mahler’s Symphony No 1 and Beethoven ’s No 7, Garry Walker conduct Stravinsky, a St Andrew’s Night special, Martyn Brabbins with the world premiere of a new flute concerto by Sally Beamish and Associate Conductor James Lowe in romantic mood for St Valentine’s Day. In the Spring, Nicola Benedetti returns to the orchestra as soloist in the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto. There is French music too, but, says Deneve, ‘I didn’t want to go too much for French music, because I am French. But also, I didn‘t want to miss it out because I am French. What I like to do is to get a balance and to get to know the orchestra and the
audiences.’
Already, he knows the orchestra enough to say ‘I adore them. Of course, I adore them. Right now, we are very definitely on our honeymoon. We love each other.’ With a certain inevitability that the audience too will fall at his feet, the unlikely concept of Scotland’s first orchestral ménage a trois could soon become reality.
