MUSICAL BALAMDRY Edinburgh Playhouse, Fri 23—Sun 25 Sep

Anyone who has witnessed a small child waving and talking back to a TV set will know that little ones don’t quite get television. As far as they’re concerned, those tiny people actually live inside the box. So imagine the surprise when your favourite nursery teacher, policeman, shopkeeper and bus driver are standing right in front of you. Easily the most successful TV show to come out of Scotland in years, Balamory has been captivating pre- schoolers across Britain and beyond for the past three years, and after a small-scale tour last Christmas, the kiddie soap is back on the road with a

brand new musical stage show.

And unlike their small-screen personas, these characters wave back. ‘There’s loads of audience interaction,’ says Andrew Agnew aka PC Plum. ‘We encourage everyone to join in with all the dance moves, but we also ask them which character should help solve each mystery. Just like the TV show, it’s all laid out for them; they shout the right name, that person comes on, sings their song and then takes the story on to another level.’ For Agnew and his fellow cast members, the live experience has been quite an eye opener. Tucked away in their Glasgow studio, or on location on the Isle of Mull, it’s hard to gauge just what a phenomenon Balamory

has become.

‘The thing we get from the stage show that we don’t get from the telly is that we actually see the people who watch Balamory,’ says Agnew. ‘You’re on the stage singing and you look into the audience and they’re all singing it back to you and you think, “when did that happen?” Because we’ve been inside a studio filming for the last three years, we don’t see the impact it’s

had. It’s amazing.’ (Kelly Apter)
