STAND-UP i STEVE HUGHES l The Stand, Edinburgh, Thu 29-Sat 1 Oct
The formula of a man, a microphone, a stool, a can of beer and a ciggie is perhaps the iconic image of a stand-up comedian. Thankfully, it was broadened in the 19805 to cover a multitude of alternatives: men in suits, teetotallers, shows with multimedia presentations, and funny women too.

subconscious mind and finishing their show with a philosophical musing. ‘Why didn’t anyone mention this at school? Why didn’t any fuckin’ bastard mention this? This would have been handier than maths!’ he
. guffaws, apropos the power of the subconscious. ‘Decisions can be made
subconsciously, that make you behave consciously without thinking. It’s a subconscious reaction.’ I suggest that maybe this isn’t taught at school because that knowledge could be a dangerous thing in the hands of kids. ‘As I got older, I started to realise that,’ he chuckles. ‘And people in government, even if they act unethically, have access to all the information on the planet about everything, and they know these things, but they choose not to do any fuckin’ thing about it or let anyone else know. Which makes them even more scary as far as I’m concerned.’
As well as the inescapable little bit of politics, Hughes offers incontrovertible proof that compared with gay men, straights are a load of pansies, and how it would be really embarrassing to be burgled just after you’d slipped on a porn video in the wee small hours. Unafraid to mix the base with the transcendental, his comic rhythm is excellent, and possibly a little to do with the fact that he used to be the drummer in a heavy metal
band. Rock on. (Robin Lee)
