GOOD COP/BAD COP Re: Dan and Dino (531)

I was bemused by Jeff Starr's letter. which opened with congratulations on The List's hard work during the Festival and the magazine staff's recognition that there's a cultural life outside Edinburgh in August. before gently castigating myself and Henry Northmore about Our unproductive and unconvincing articles on, respectively. Daniel Johnston and J Mascis.

The praising/patronisirig tone reminded me of the old good cop/bad cop routine: set ‘em up for the sucker punch. And the old Hollywood adage: make 'em laugh then make ‘em cry. But mostly I had the weird feeling that God, that hoary patriarch. wasn't smiling down upon The List.

Has the magazine been getting too big for its boots? Should its writers give up trying to unearth interesting/obscuretish) subjects? Perhaps it should just cover what rival publications are trumpeting? Miles Fielder Edinburgh

BARD RIGID

Re: As You Like It Review (531)

I take Steve Cramer's comments on the Lyceum's production of As You Like It. with a pinch of salt: 'another night of laughter in the theatre"? Come on. when was Elizabethan comedy ever funny? Blackadder got it right. when he said to his sidekick. Baldrick: 'You'd even laugh at a Shakespeare comedy'.

It's the same people who laugh at the Bard's effusions as those who guffaw at the lOO-year-old jokes in Prufrock and The l/Vaste/and or

MANCHESTER MAD FOR US?

Re: Manchester Listings Guide I am a comedy promoter and an agent for comedians in Manchester and every year when I'm in Glasgow or in Edinburgh for the festival. I buy The List. which is a superb publication. Being a Londoner. I grew up reading Time Out. which I still buy occasionally". even though l don't live in l ondon any more.

Unlike Glasgow. I din'riurgh and l ondoh. Manchester does not have a listings maga/irie of which to be proud.

Zohsidering it is a busy (:liy wrth an ever expanding comedy and theatre scene. a whole host of new restaurants. a lhrrvrng night life and a city’ famous for its music scene. if is ama/ing that it doesn't haze a guality listings maga/ine.

I really believe there is a gap in the market here, and I think there are businesses who would readily invest and advertise in a Manchester edition of your publication.

As I'm a I ondoher'. I tend to moan a great deal and express my dissatisfactirin. But this is a growrhg city; demograj)hically. commercrally. musically. comically and gastrr)nomicallyv. and it's crying out for a listings publication of The / rst's guality: Ashley Boroda Manchester
