Subculture keep up the quality when it comes to cutting-edge house as they welcome the Scottish debut of Dixon. Beat 106’s underground ambassador Mash gives the lowdown.
Who would have thought that Glam Rock would make a comeback. Whether you realise (or believe me). it has quietly crept through the back door. stopping off at a public-relations expert along the way. Glam Rock was a British phenomenon of the early 708. Its main identifying mark wasn't just the clothes worn or the band. but the 6/8 timing of the music. Checkout Franz Ferdinand's latest big hitter. ‘Do You Want To' — it's catchy, credible pop rock with a nod to Marc Bolan.
Former List cover stars Goldfrapp are living proof that the 6/8 glam rock rhythms have commercial and accessible appeal. Their recent chart topper ‘Ooh la Ia'. owes a lot to the sounds of T-Rex. They previously touched on the sound with their track, ‘Train‘, which, as rumour has it, was given to remixer du jour Richard X to work on. Goldfrapp consequently rejected the result. so Richard X recycled the remix, dropped in a vocal from some girl called Rachel Stevens and a pop hit was born. How come that bubblegum pop of ‘Some Girls' sounds so different to the cool of Goldfrapp?
Check out the wave of German techno and electro producers that are recording in the 6/8 time signature. A lot of it circulates around Cologne's mighty Kompakt and its associated labels. also look out for electronic artists like Michael Mayer and Glasgow's own Jonnie Wilkes. James Savage and Marco Bernardi.
Fonunately I don't think there will be a Slade revival. but don't worry about Noddy Holder, he is still earning from his nuts adverts. oh and the “Merry Xmas Everybody' royalty cheques will be on their way soon.
