Folk, techno, dance, rock, house - it’s a rarity for these terms to come together on this page, particularly when referring to just one ten-minute piece. Written in 1994, the young British composer Julian Anderson’s Khorovod has already had around 50 performances, which is also something unusual in the modern classical music world. Giving the opportunity to hear it and to learn something about it in an unstuffy yet informed and unpatronising way is one of the more recent initiatives from the National Youth Orchestras of Scotland stable — nyos: futures.
An ensemble made up of 15 of the older, generally college age, NYOS players, the group have just one weekend to rehearse and present the piece in workshop format to the public. Director of the project is Paul MacAlindin, the Scottish born conductor currently working in Germany. ‘The structure is that the audience gets a run through, there’s then a sort of lecture with musical examples, followed by a second performance,’ he explains. ‘I chose this piece for a number of reasons. I’d done it before as part of Manchester’s World Music Days, but was left thinking that I wanted
to know more, to dig deeper.’
Part of MacAlindin’s attraction to the music is to do with its title and what khorovod means. ‘lt’s a Russian circle dance that’s part of a tradition which stretches from eastern Europe to Greece. Julian wrote his own tunes based on this tradition, so there is a folk route to Khorovod but it is contemporary. You do get an impression of people whirling around. It’s joyous, emotionally charismatic and looks like a completely mad whirlwind, but it’s actually structured and organised.’ If you want to know more, there will be a chance for audience questions in this novel approach to presenting contemporary music.
