Making the leap from page to stage is never easy. Books conjure up images in our minds which can never be truly replicated by someone else’s vision. Which is why Mull Theatre, the creators of Katie Morag the stage musical, decided to start from scratch. All the usual suspects from Mairi Hedderwick’s original books are there: Katie, Grannie Island, Grannie Mainland - even the CalMac ferry which links Katie’s home on the Isle of Struay to the rest of the world. But so too are some new characters - three American tourists who visit the island while Katie’s parents are away - and a whole new storyline. With a little help from the audience, the characters solve riddles, sing songs and find themselves in the odd spooky location.
Director and composer Gordon Dougall explains why playwright Lisa Grindall chose not to stage one of Hedderwick’s existing tales: ‘Lisa and Mairi spoke a great deal about how to turn Katie Morag into a stage show, and decided it had to be a new story, but with elements from the books that people might recognise. So essentially it’s a standalone musical theatre piece for young people.’ (Kelly Apter)
