Let’s just cast aside any mention straight off the bat about whether Andrew E Maxwell should have won the big controversial comedy gong during the
August we’ve just been through and get to the core of the matter: this Dublin comic is quite simply a very funny man. He has funny bones running all the way down his body where people just have normal, run of the mill, everyday bone structures.
Anyone who saw Maxwell’s Grand Royale show at the Pleasance can be sure of one thing: he’s simply been put here to give as many people as he can get in a room a good laugh. ‘I don’t want to do anything else, it’s not a stepping stone for me,’ he insists. ‘I may be invited to get involved in other things; I’ve passed on a film script to my agent, I’ve done a short movie, I go snowboarding in the Alps and I’ve styled magazine shoots. Those are sidelines but I just love making people laugh.’
Oddly, for an Irish comic, he actually makes little comedic hay in his childhood, one which must have been full of incident, considering he was a Dublin Protestant. ‘It must be like being an Asian in the Orkneys. You’re massively outnumbered but you’re more of a novelty than anything else. Still, I was in fine company; Wolfetone, the founders of the Gaelic league, ultimate wmcdy referendum as I George Bernard Shaw, Samuel Beckett: all Prods. People actually thought I Scotland's bright young things 11m,“- ; was a Hare Krishna cos they’d never seen me at mass.’ For the uninitiated, their short theatre pieces into the pot. 1 it’s time to pray at the Maxwell altar.
