it comes to picnics. ()ur tartan-lined baskets should be

tilled to the brim with springy salads. freshly baked cakes. enough gourmet sandwiches to feed a small army and the odd Scotch egg. The reality‘.’ Tomato sandwiches turned soggy. slightly squished cheesecake and a sprinkling of tiny. disintegrating sausage rolls.

Frankly. it doesn't cut the mustard. However. a clutch of delis dedicated to the cause of filling their shelves with tasty. rustic treats. light summer wines and fruit fresh from the markets of Milan is proving that l‘oodies need not do it for themselves when it comes to dining alfresco.

Those airing out their woollen plaid rug and heading for the Botanics or Kelvingrove Park in Glasgow can choose from a variety ol~ savoury tarts and salads at Heart Buchanan Fine Food and Wine (380 Byres Road. (ll-ll 334 7626).

Also popular for lunchtime munching. according to owner Claire Jones. is sliced (‘apocollo Italian cured leg of pork marinated in Chianti wine (£1.55 per 1()()g). while the sweet toothed can browse the extensive pastry and cake selection. Try Frutti di Bosco. slabs of white chocolate sprinkled with mixed berries. or a chocolate brownie to die for that costs a mere £1.50.

Here. mouth-watering peaches. nectarines. apricots and plump vine tomatoes arrive from Milan every Monday (starting at £5.95 per 1()()g). From the counter. individual Boccacini that’s little balls of bull'an mozzarella to you and me are a popular addition to any impromptu salad (£2 for three or four). as are colourful sun-dried tomatoes in oil (£1.8()/1()()g).
