Even journalists know that there’s no such thing as a free lunch. But concerts are quite a different matter. With no strings attached - proverbially speaking - other than the late Yehudi Menuhin’s aim to make really good live music as openly accessible as possible, musicians from his Live Music Now! scheme can be heard completely free of charge.

In a new collaboration with the National Museums of Scotland and the National Galleries of Scotland, Menuhin would be delighted not only that access to music is being widened but also access to the great cultural resources of museums and galleries, whether their vast permanent or

special temporary exhibitions.

Helen Monaghan, who programmes the National Galleries’ talks and events, says: ‘lt’s great to mix different forms of the arts, and at the same time showcase the talented young musicians from Live Music Now! it enables people to benefit from the unique combination of music and art, offering them a more universal gallery experience.’

In a win~win-win scenario, the young professionals who are part of Live Music Now! get invaluable performing experience, the museums and galleries are able to offer a more culturally comprehensive experience to visitors and the public get to hear great music by musical stars of the future. With artists the calibre of soprano Lisa Milne, accompanist Malcolm Martineau and violinist Clio Gould all past members of Menuhin's scheme, these concerts offer the added excitement of ‘catching them young’.

National Museums’ learning manager Emma Webb says: ‘Our museums are spectacular settings for live music performances, which are very popular with visitors. Music can bring a vibrant new perspective to exhibitions such as Nicholas and Alexandra.’ The concerts run through the summer, the last Tuesday of every month at the Royal Museum of Scotland and selected Thursdays at the National Galleries.
