When you hear someone like Bill ‘Smog’ Callahan - with a
voice somewhere between polished mahogany and treacle - you really don’t really envisage him to look quite as he does. The weedy, almost apologetic demeanour is a cunning front for a songwriting talent that might suit a large, ragged, hirsute mountain man but somehow he manages to squeeze it into his slender frame. His newie A River Ain’t Too Much To Love might not set jaws a-dropping like its two predecessors do, but live, Callahan is still entrancing.
