Patrick Gale, Friendly Fire (HarperCollins) eeee John Sam Jones, With Angels And Furies (Millivres) eee
Some writers who lead such privileged lives. Good-looking, well- educated, very middle-class Patrick Gale is is one such novelist, often featured in magazine articles with his hunky boyfriend farmer in their stunning home near Land’s End. Gale also just happens to write novels exceedingly well, and his latest, Friendly Fire, is one of his very best. Charting the education of a parentless girl in an exclusive school that is mainly for boys, Friendly Fire is utterly unput-downable. Concentrating on the girl’s friendship with a sophisticated gay Jewish 14-year-old, who, in turn, is in love with their male teacher, Friendly Fire explores notions of surrogate families and the transforming power of a good education. It is full of Patrick Gale stock ingredients: music scholars, bell ringers, dotty dowagers and precocious, sexually active teenagers, but it is the female teenage narrator at its heart who makes the book so endearing. Her isolation, her kindness and her growing wisdom make this the kind of book you want to stay in bed all day with and devour. There’s a horrifying climax to the novel when the girl’s favourite gay teacher is about to be exposed as having a relationship with a boy. The awful repercussions of this episode don’t really darken the novel strongly enough, because generally Gale is an entertainer. It’s a pity because this lightness stops Friendly Fire being a truly great novel. It doesn’t ever quite reach the greatness of iris Murdoch, but nevertheless it is really entertaining. Welshman John Sam Jones was a chaplain before becoming a sexual health worker. His second novel With Angels and Furies is more rough and raw than Gale’s but not as compulsive. It is a fascinating, truthful story of a gay relationship on the rocks, and explores issues of monogamy and sexual dysfunction in long-term coupledom. Yet it is tender and comic and has as its backdrop a distinctive Welsh landscape which we rarely see depicted in gay fiction. Buy both books for your
summer reading. (John Binnie)
