Beat 1063 underground ambassador Mash gives the lowdown.

What’s in a name? I seem to spend half my life thinking of names for club nights or tracks or whatever. When Ali and I started a night at Volcano 12 years ago we needed a name rather than ‘DJs Martyn and Ali'. As we were playing Jenga at the time. after about three minutes. Jengaheads was the moniker we went with and we ran with it for longer than we would have ever thought. Once an interviewer even asked where in Scandinavia we were from?

When Ali put down his headphones in favour of his gorgeous babies Evie and Lachlan (very Scottish names) I was left looking for a pseudonym as Martyn Jengahead was not that appealing. even though some people Still refer to me as that. So I went with the name that many of my friends had called me for some time: Mash. l have put out various Mash tracks which have been played by the likes of Sneak. Freaks. Harri and Jonny Fiasco. It's always great having your peers playing your music. Currently I'm in the process of working on some vinyl for Nuphonics new label Tirk and forthcoming remixes for Markus Enochson. Quinn and Mangomad. The delightfully named Dahling starts 28 May at Favela with me and the Visitor DJing. Also check out my newly named Friday at the Liquid Lounge, Vandal, with me and Gianni (Haptic). We've got Our first guest in the shape of Chemical Brothers tour DJ. 2020 Vision artist. Bugged Out and Back to Basics resident James Holroyd (3 June). I‘ve DJed with him a few times at Bugged Out and me and Ali's old Subby night Electric Bogey (er . . . I think I'm responsible for that one) and he is definitely quality. See you there.
