REASONS TO 60 SEE

3 ~-

sums AN’ A’ THAT! 1 Gets you out the house . . . and out the City, down the A71 to Ayr. For ten days the seaside town becomes the focus of a festival. celebrating the works and spirit of our national bard. and does it with a blast of sea air about its chops.

2 It's eclectic One show alone features Pete ‘Babyshambles’ Doherty. actor Tarn Dean Burn, his brother Russell from the Fire Engines and DJ Jo Malik. Elsewhere there's everything from Whitbread- winning poet Don Paterson playing jazz to Blazin’ Fiddles, Findlay Quaye. Karine Polwart and even a special one-off Vegas club night.

3 Some of it’s free No doubt with Burns' egalitarian ethos in mind. prices have been kept low. with a lot of events actually tree. Surely that'll just be the crap stuff though. eh? How about the world's hottest dance act Mylo. performing in Wellington Square on the last night? Kerrching!

4 There’s a fringe What's a festival without a fringe? This one has ceilidhs. whisky and win tastings, hoedowns, debates. discos. poems and pints, folk jams, nicnics, recitals and a musical. I'm there already.

5 Lou Reed Yes. really. The opening gala concert at Culzean Castle features the Orchestra of Scottish Opera with guests including t. ou Reed. Dougie MacLean and Phil Cunningham. Bet you never thought you'd see them on the same bill, eh? (Doug Johnstone)

I Various venues in and around Ayr; Fri QO—Sun 29 May. See listings and twvwburnsfestlva/com for more details.
