COMEDY or) HEY, THAT’S FUNNY! (Rhino) oooo

Listening to stand-up comedy on disc is not far off the description I once heard on TV about having sex with a condom: a bit like chewing a toffee with the wrapper on. And while some of this mainly live US comedy collection may leave a similarly weird taste in the mouth, you know there’s a sweet product underneath. But as you listen closely to the material, there is much visual fun being missed in the silences and pauses. Still, one blessing is that we’re spared the Technicolor nightmare that will almost certainly be Robin Williams’ stage outfit.

As a history of the last three decades of American funny folk (only Monty Python were born beyond those shores), it’s intriguing to see the evolutionary patterns that emerge. There are the blistering ballbusters in the shape of Sam Kinison, Bill Hicks and Denis Leary; philosophical Jewish fun from Woody Allen, Billy Crystal and Mel Brooks; the mono- monikered laconic ladies Ellen and Roseanne; the arch surrealists of Cheech & Chong and Steven Wright; and the black kings of comedy, Pryor, Crosby and Rock.

This two-disc affair splits the fun more or less down the middle with one being mainly stand-up and the second a mix of sketches (Python’s rather un-American ‘Argument Clinic’ and a tedious Saturday Night Live ramble about gun control) plus crank calls from the Jerky Boys and Triumph the Insult Dog. Just remember to take it out of its sleeve. (Brian Donaldson)
