Around Town

Name Craig McGee Profession Promoter of Glasgow bands

How long have you been in the job? About a year and a half at WVi/VVQIaSQOWlTlLlSlC.(I().llk and two years if you include managing mates‘ bands beforehand.

How did you get into it? Started it myself by annoying my friend Chris into allowmg me to manage his band Catbuster. I got hooked on the promotion and going to gigs and eventually bought a digital camera to show off my pictures of gigs on the web. I chose the name Glasgow Music for my site and it kind of took off from there. Then I started doing things with Subcity radio and started a clubnight.

What’s the best bit about it? Putting on a night that everyone's still raving about days later, seeing bands and getting CDs for free.

And the worst? Yet to find out. ISUppose...

Favourite band? the Libertines are my favourite band; anyone who knows me will tell you. As for Glasgow at this moment in time . _ . Sens and Daughters. the Ronelles and Figure 5').

If you weren’t doing this job, what would you do? I'm currently finishing a degree in economics. so I dread to think what c0uld have happened. Plans for the future? I want to continue with the Tuesday club gigs at Tom Tom and look to get more venues and bring bands from around the country into Glasgow. I want to promote Glasgow's music scene. which Will be helped by my new website. and also do more DJ sets and maybe get a regular slot somewhere.

What would you do on your ideal day off in Glasgow? Lie in until early afternoon. get tip and head into town. If it was a Sunny day. a few drinks in the park while kicking a football about with mates and then head to a gig at Stereo. telling the sunny day. any Friday meeting iii Nice'n'Slea/ys around 3--/1pm and then going to Pinup Nights or Funbouse is always good.

BENEFIT/TRIBUTE

THE SPACE YOU’RE NOT IN OranMor, Glasgow, Sat May 14, 7pm

Gifted poet and performer Gail Wylie died of leukaemia last September aged 32, five months after she was diagnosed with the illness. By way of celebrating the Glaswegian’s life and work, while raising money for Gartnavel Hospital’s new Leukaemia Research Centre, a roll call of the Scottish arts scene’s best-kent figures are to congregate for a mouthwatering evening of poetry, music and theatre. The Space You’re Not In takes its title from Wylie’s poignant poem about loss and longing, which begins, ‘Being sane in a moment/ Being sober/ Climb down from the chittle chattle/ A hush in the space/ It’s then I miss you.’

The event takes place in OranMor in Glasgow's West End, the lively, eclectic venue being transformed into a vintage jazz lounge for the evening. £30 a ticket seems a snip after a quick peak at the line-up which includes stalwart writers Liz Lochead, Alasdair Gray, James Kelman and Janice Galloway and features musical contributions from Eddi Reader (pictured), Belle and Sebastian and Arab Strap. The evening opens with a champagne reception and there will be an auction of artworks and musical instruments signed by the likes of Billy Connolly and Franz Ferdinand.

These artists are all appearing for free in tribute to Wylie, whose passion for life and the arts has been summed up by painter and playwright John Byrne, who has created artwork inspired by her poetry. ‘She was so full of life . . . unforgettable, literally. Anything I can do would be a privilege. Gail was an inspiration and the world is so much the poorer without that wonderful light of hers’. (Allan Radcliffe)
