1 They’re the best-kept lrish secret ever Ireland is a funny place. There are bands over there selling shedloads and getting mobbed in the street. and we've never heard of 'em. The Frames recently had four albums in the Hot Press magazine Top 100 lrish Albums Ever poll. Take that, the Corrs. 2 They know how to work a crowd The band was formed by singer songwriter Glen Hansard at the end of the 805 from a collection of mates. all of whom were Dublin buskers. Hansard had been earning a living from busking since he was 13. 3 The Commitments connection Hansard was in The Commitments playing the band's guitarist Outspan. but he doesn't like to talk about it. So don't mention it. And certainly don't shout for ‘Mustang Sally' at the show or you'll get battered. 4 They’re masters of mood Over a 15-year career the Frames have produced Pixies-style punk, low-key melancholic folk. stadium rock and all points in between. Put it this way: producers they‘ve worked with include both Trevor Horn and Steve Albini. Now that's range. 5 A daft cover version or two Hansard‘s solo acoustic shows have seen him covering Bon Jovi, Van Morrison and George Michael. But not “Mustang Sally’. as far as we know. Jon Spencer and cohorts Russell Simmins
and Judah Bauer have wrestled with the blues like a frisky alligator for over a decade, knocking seven shades of funk, punk and hip hop crunk out of it along the way. When it comes to live performance, few come within a shitty stick of them. Able to rattle through a set list long enough to make a Ramone wince. they may bleed the blues but there’s the heart of a soul revue showman beating in Spencer’s pigeon chest. It’s not unreasonable to imagine them being ‘rediscovered’ in 35 years’ time, rocking a tiny stage in some New Jersey bar as they’ve never truly got the props they deserve this time round. Make up for lost time and go show them some love.
