SlANl) til" SCOTT CAPURRO The Stand, Edinburgh, Tue 5 Apr; the Stand, Glasgow, Wed 6 Apr
One of the most wonderfully cringeworthy TV moments of last year came during the opening episode of E4’s The Kings of Comedy. With Stan Boardman and Scott Capurro vying for the public vote to stay in, word came through that E4’s phone lines had gone down and that the pair’s fate would be decided by a show of hands from the studio audience. Cue scorn and outrage from the assembled comics as the gay San Franciscan and gregarious Scouser went, as it were, head to head.
History will tell you that Capurro lost the vote but won plenty sympathy as the shambles resulted in his eviction from the little laughter household. Still, Capurro’s few moments among his peers such as Janey Godley and Andrew Maxwell, and those ‘heroes‘ of yesteryear like Mick Miller and Boothby Graffoe (ha ho) showed that he was as far away from his vicious stage act (“Anne Frank: that little bitch’ anyone?) as you can get. Stage Capurro would have lasted five minutes before crudely destroying the less than agreeable features of Stan Boardman’s character, but Scott Capurro seemed to simply love going along with the ride.
In this pair of DDT Specials, Capurro will hopefully give us more material of the kind that had nuns chasing him (metaphorically) around Liverpool, outraged at his eroticisation of Christ, and left everyone else somewhat askance at his lust for Jeffrey Dahmer. Charming. (Brian Donaldson)
