But I suppose these days, unless you‘re staying in a hotel room, you might not have access to one, so get along to this revival of David Harrower‘s subtly declamatory little play about language instead. For both posit the notion that words for things predate, in a very real way. the existence of those things. and as such. are the most powerfully liberating or destructive items we possess. Things that don‘t exist at all (weapons of mass destruction/dirty bombs) are given tangible form to the point of seeming to be there if incanted often enough by those in authority, for, like John Boy suggests, the word is with authority.

80 it is that the metaphors and phrases of Pony William (Sam Heughan) dominate the life of his spouse (Rosalind Sydney), for it is he that has authority. naming things from a position of patriarchal, institutional and religious power. But he has his vices. like a fascination

for his horses which, if local gossip is to be believed. extends animal husbandry to the point of conjugal rights. It is then, understandable, on Harrower's dark and forbidding; pre-modern village landscape. that she should look to the out-of—town and much despised Miller (John Kazek), the gruel on the hill. Here, her increasing fear and fascination with the unusually literate flour power merchant extends to her unconscious landscape, and soon she seeks to liberate her repressions through text and rugs and rocks that roll, seeking literacy, consummation and finally murder with his stone grinding wheel.

Guy Hollands' production for TAG sees Neil Warmington‘s primitive barn design beautifully lit by Paul Sorley, recreating the necessary primal feel of the landscape. Yet the landscape is only there to background words, written, spoken, invented and reiterated which hegemonically dominate the lives interior and exterior, of the characters. We‘ve come to expect nothing less from John Kazek, but here, again, he is splendid as the Miller. as much proiected upon as projecting in this damp little hothouse. while Sydney shows a more eccentric, almost deluded. yet equally fascinating side to the character of the wifey. Indeed all are strong in what amounts to an ideas—rich and very powerful production. But don't. of course, take my Word for it . . . (Steve Cramer)
