Gay clubbing is all about Euro pop, fruit flies. high camp and neon rubber. right? Not so much. A spate of quality gay-friendly, independent clubs have sprung up over the last two years, and they‘re changing the public‘s perception of this previously ignominious nightlife subcategory.
Musical diversity is a defining characteristic of the new breed; guitar chords and punk dynamics have displaced cheap and nasty canned beats as the de rigueur sound in gay clubbing. New Edinburgh mixed night Heroes comes at the potential reveller with an aggressive and progressive PR aesthetic that is a disavowal of the conventions not only of gay clubbing, but of clubbing in general. As part-founder Gregor Laird puts it: ‘We want to see what happens when people from all the splintered “scenes” get in one room. “Scenes” are so tired, so last century. If all you want is to be herded like a cow into a room full of clones. I think you should stay at home, get out your mirror and fuck yourself.‘ Fair enough. Martin Belk, also from Heroes, explains that. with the evolution of the scene, the sexually prescribed door policy has become obsolete. ‘We’re not defining our club in terms of sexual preference. suit, his girlfriend and their tranny friend come to the door, they‘re welcome. as long as they can dance.‘
Live music on the inaugural date for Heroes comes from Motormark. who recently appeared at new Glasgow gay-friendly night Utter Gutter. The night is hosted by the mysterious Madame Sannex and scene stalwart Hushpuppy. Like Heroes, Utter Gutter is a party predicated on disrespect for musical and sexual boundaries. The atmosphere at the club is akin to that of an informal house party hosted by your mates, and Madame Sannex exploits Gutter's organic climate to rail against the musical homogeneity of gay clubbing: ‘Somebody somewhere decided that if you are gay, you are supposed to dance to speeded up trance, or Kylie house. It‘s a pain in the ass. For years, the choice hasn‘t been fair. It should be the kind of place where both straight and gay people feel welcome.‘
Sannex comments on the proliferation of the independent gay club in the last two years: ‘Abnormals Anonymous (housed at the CCA, and then the Glasgow School of Art) started all of this off. A lot of clubs sprouted up on the back of that. Deathkill 4000 has a good gay crowd. Then, there‘s the wonderful Disko Bloodbath in Edinburgh. The Riverside Club in Glasgow has become the alternative gay venue in Glasgow.‘
With the renaissance of the independent gay club. revellers of every persuasion are being forced into a long overdue reassessment of the scene.
