THE ART OF SHAKING

Luxury Cocktail Masterclasses. Harvey Nichols. Edinburgh. 23 Feb. 7pm: Cocktails, Vermilion. The Scotsman. Edinburgh. 3 Mar. 6pm.

Blame Carrie and co‘s sexy Manhattans; 007's martini shaken, not stirred. or the delectable Tom Cruise describing the virtues of the ‘Singapore sling and the ding-a-ling’ as he wooed Elizabeth Shue in 805 flick Cocktail. These combinations of naughty liquids are big business, whatever the colour, shape, size or strength.

And now, with the Visa bill (almost) paid off and spring just around the corner, it’s time to inject a little sweetness into your life, to shake things up a little. Help is at hand: where gastronomy began it our umbrella’d friend looks set to end it, with a glut of cocktail masterclasses hitting the scene. Food tasting is old school; 2005 is all about infusing an air of sophistication into your drinking habits.

In the capital, the Scotsman‘s fine dining restaurant, Vermilion. will be hosting its very own cocktails evening (3 March), courtesy of head barman Gary Mallet. You can learn the difference between Sex on the Beach and a Bellini for free as long as you book in advance. Shopping emporium Harvey Nicks gets its shakers at the ready with a Luxury Cocktail Masterclass (23 February). Expect a tutored tasting session, which includes tippling Tanqueray 10 Gin and trendy Ciroc Vodka. After the tasting, learn to create your own contemporary cocktail. In Glasgow, look out for tastings throughout the year, courtesy of Rose Murray Brown at the Arthouse in Glasgow. The List already has its champagne cocktail class, taking place in early April, in the diary. Bliss. (Anna Millar)
