CHRISTOPHER WOOD’S ‘NUDE BOY IN A BEDROOM’ By Richard lngleby

Christopher Wood is a bit of a cult figure. He was the only British artist of his generation to infiltrate the Paris of Picasso. Cocteau and Diaghilev in the 19208 ‘a convenient bisexuality being no handicap in that particular sphere. as the novelist Anthony Powell rather cattily put it. His path through that glittering world was eased by boyish good looks and a legendan/ charm, but he died tragically, aged just 29. in August 1930. taking his own life in an opium fuddled haze by jumping in front of a train at Salisbury station.

I've loved his paintings. with their engagineg odd and sometimes slightly sinister mix of naivety and sophistication. for as long as known them. It was painted in a little hotel in Brittany in the last weeks before Wood's death and once belonged to the actor John Gielgud. until the tax man turned on him in the 19708 and he had to flog it. His loss was our gain and it's a picture that I always used to seek out on trips to the capital from the less cultured comers of Argyle and Perthshire where I grew up. I'd spend a bit of time With a few faVOurite pictures swiftly followed by a ginger slice in the cafe downstairs: it's a pretty good combination that I still find hard to beat.

I Richard lngleby IS director of the lngleby Gallery in Edinburgh: Nude boy in a Bedroom can be seen at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art.
