Who says clubbing has to be hard on the wallet? For those of us not regularly sitting on guest lists, a great many parties offer interesting, funky, even trendy nights out on the cheap.
A not unreliable rule of thumb where cheap clubbing is concerned is to search out those clubs that have a dedicated approach to music, but which also maintain a low cover charge. These clubs do it for the love, and you’ll find that some of the most genuinely interesting dancefloor developments take place away from the velvet rope venues. Classic cheap club night National Pop League (monthly) is a steal with an entry charge of 23. It has a loyal following, and it‘s easy to see why. This West End party plays the best real indie music (ie not stuff like the Bluetones or Keane) and 086 at the Woodside Social. Its clientele are a cut above, and the themed nights, (like those dedicated to the Smiths, for example) are always a roaring, cheap success.
Instant Access (weekly Thursdays, the Sub Club) takes the cover charge down yet another notch, with a paltry £2 entry fee. This modest pecuniary liberty belies the wealth of great music and inventiveness that characterises the Access party. The incomparable Tiff Peaches is resident.
Club Tromolo, (monthly at the Buff Club) is the funniest club night in Glasgow, and another place where entry doesn‘t mean tightening the purse strings. Live music from resident band Quinn plus guests, live comedy from a host of wonderful characters including Diane Torr and Frank Percy and art bursting out of every one of the club‘s nooks and crannies mean that the £5 charge will seem tiny by the time the club is done.
This is just the smallest of roundups of great cheap clubs in the city; see listings for more ideas. (Johnny Regan)
