Film editor Paul Dale picks out the hot tips for 2005
The only trouble with some of the more interesting films you may get a chance of seeing in 2005 is that they tend to be distributed by small distribution companies on just a few prints, so these films will open in London. a month or two before they reach us Cine-literate peasants in the provinces. Some of the films here have London-only dates. Scottish dates are yet to be confirmed. Here's hoping that 2005 brings us some good luck and some ballsy programming. The year gets off to a great start with Bahman A Time for Drunken Horses Ghobadi's lovely tender film Turtles Can Fly (7 Jan), set near the Iraqi- Turkish border on the eve of an American invasion. From there it is a mix of old and modern There's a new print of Scorsese‘s Mean Streets (21 Jan), Theo Angelopoulos' part one of a much feted trilogy. The Weeping Meadow. Alexander Election Payne's Sideways (28 Jan). a remake of the great 1965 family adventure movie Flight of the Phoenix (25 Feb). but the highlight of the year has to be the release of Emir Kusturica's newest slab of scenic barbarity Life is a Miracle (1 1 Mar). Kusturica is a bulldog among puppies in European cinema and we should all kneel before him.
