Functionsuite is all about exploding myths. Gone in a shower of sparks is the notion of the artist as solitary and anti-social, crafting away in some cold, lonely garret. Also blasted into oblivion are images of hospitals as sterile, cheerless institutions to be vastly body-swerved unless absolutely
necessary.
Artlink is running the visual art project, which for the past 20 years has prevailed in making the arts more accessible to people who have traditionally been socially excluded. Functionsuite is unique in that it does not focus on particular marginalised groups, but aims to collaborate with the entire hospital community, from patients to staff, whether they be nurse, doctor, porter or cleaner. Thus, a creative pool of around 30,000 people becomes involved in the artistic process in hospitals across
Edinburgh and the Lothians.
Having been up and developing for about a year, Functionsuite is now beginning to bear aesthetic fruit. Diverse highlights include Anne Elliot’s series of film portraits of patients and staff, entitled ‘Ways of Involving,’ and the creation of a temporary pavilion hewn from discarded materials from the Royal Edinburgh psychiatric hospital. Kate Gray, one of the artists involved in this work, is interested in ‘thinking about hospitals in ways which do not designate them as outside of the “normal” sphere but as a dynamic part of the culture of a city.’ Paul Carter, who last year featured in the Fruitmarket Gallery’s Visions for the Future show, is involved with The New Republic at St John’s Hospital in Livingston.
A trip to the hospital is not normally associated with cutting edge cultural experience. But if you switch off your inhibitions along with your mobile phone at the sliding doors, you’re likely to be entranced. (Allan Radcliffe)
