The Magic Roundabout, The Railway Children, The Mr Men series, The Famous Five, The Borrowers. Whatever the age, it seems the literature of our youth never strays far from the mind. Jeremy Raison, director of the Citizens’ stage adaptation of Mary Norton’s The Borrowers, is counting on it. ‘We wanted to create a family show, something that would really appeal across the board whether you’re three or 30. It’s a story we grew up with so there’s already a very human element there. And it’s a nice departure from panto.’ Not that Raison is derogatory about such ‘he’s behind you’ warblings — he’s simply looking to create a different beast. ‘Children are the world’s greatest critics because their reaction is immediate and their attention span so short-lived. I want to create something beautiful and adventurous with a great story at its core for children and adults to engage with.’
For those poor souls unfamiliar with the original, The Borrowers was, and indeed is, a wonderful collection of books about a family of tiny people, just a few inches high, who live under the floorboards of an old country house in England. Pod, Homily and the 13-year-old Arrietty exist and furnish their miniature home by ‘borrowing’ scraps and oddments from the house above. Raison is keen to add another dimension to the book in this adaptation by Lynn Robertson Hay, while staying more faithful to the original text than any consequent television and film versions. ‘We want to combine several of the stories from the collection and make them this great adventurous whole, while never losing the very basic fascination with big and large that lies at the heart of the piece.’
The design potentials are also limitless, and that’s a challenge Raison welcomes. ‘The stage is this great place to bring to life all the incredible images of the book. We’re working on design with Kenny Miller, and we’re really stretching ourselves and the realms of theatre design, looking to find solutions for things that aren’t always easy to fix.’ Certainly, while the size differentiation should make things a little problematic, there’ll be no 061 trickery, now so beloved of the silver screen, for Raison. ‘We have a great cast, a great designer and a wonderful story: if we can make it into a really charming Christmas show, then we‘ve been successful.‘ (Anna Millar)
