ArtBeat
Gossip. chat and rumour from the gallery fIOOr
I It’s been a dizzy few weeks for Scotland’s art world. And it’s time to take stock. First off, Roddy Buchanan beat competition including Simon Starling and Martin Boyce to win the bountiful Paul Hamlyn Award of £30,000 spread over three years (don’t spend it all at once, now). His best known work, ‘Gobstopper’, a video of boys desperately holding their breath as they’re driven under the Clyde, is on show at the Gallery of Modern Art, Glasgow, as part of its newly expanded permanent collection, and is worth checking out to remind you why he’s so good.
n Then down at the Frieze Art Fair in London, the Tate dCCldCd to snap up work by Martin Boyce 7 ‘Untitled. (Gate)' 2004 and works by Scott Myles including ‘Aiter the Mountains. More Mountains' 2004 (pictured). Amanda Sharp. co- director of Frieze. said: 'It's been a really extraordinary ten years in Scotland and it's a very exciting movement at the moment.‘ Both Glasgow~based artists are represented by the Modern Institutes Toby Webster.
l Which takes us onto the next point. Mr Webster has just been voted number 70 in ArtReview’s top 100 most influential movers and shakers in the global art world. He nudges Damien Hirst who comes in at 78, but has some way to go before hitting the number one spot currently awarded to Larry Gagosian, dealer extraordinaire. Sneaking in at 100, the only other Scottish representative is the artist everyone loves to hate, Jack Vettriano.
I And finally. lucky Rosalind Nashashibi. winner of the Becks 2003 Award. is ott to New York for six months to make and research new work. The residency comes courtesy of the Scottish Arts Council.
