Soma Records wants you to go back to school. Well, Soma Skool to be exact - a one day dance music conference at the Arches in Glasgow on Friday 29 October. The venture, now in its second year, is a collaboration between the label and Channel 4 Ideas Factory and the premise is to help young musicians, DJs, or anyone else wishing to get into the industry with hands- on workshops, industry panels and Q&A sessions with world renowned international DJs like Green Velvet, John Acquaviva, Slam and Ewan Pearson. Those who missed the Franz Ferdinand shindigs at the Barras can take solace in the fact that the hand wrll play SECC on 18 December. Also the wonderful Lemon Jelly pay Edinburgh 8 visit when they drop into the Usher Hall on 5 March. Then there's Kylie two weeks later on the 19 March at the SECC it you're that way inclined. WIN DIZZEE RASCAL GOODIES! We try not to give you the same old prizes in our competitions so we challenged those cheeky folks at XL Records to find us something a bit special. The endless parade of ‘young precocious talent‘ to

emerge over the last 18 months (led by Norah Jones with Jamie Cullum, Katie Melua, Amy Winehouse, Natasha Beddingfield) now has Joss Stone in tow. Great singers, perhaps wasted by the MOR material, in Stone‘s case for sure. She has balls and a great voice. Maybe she’ll get a chance to use them to their best potential.
