Tom Bancroft is about to launch what is arguably his most ambitious project to date with this UK tour featuring the great American pianist Geri Allen as a special guest. The project has its roots in a BBC commission, but has taken four years to come to fruition, as Tom explains.
‘I was discussing a commission with Radio 3 back in 2000, and they asked me who I might like to work with as a special guest. The first name I suggested was Geri, and they jumped at it, so that was that. She is a fantastic musician, and I’m really looking forward to working with her.
‘I've called the band Orchestro lnterrupto because we tend to get together at quite long intervals, but I still really see it as one long project that keeps getting interrupted. The delay in getting this commission off the ground has really been down to trying to set up a tour to go along with it, because the BBC commission was only for a broadcast. Eventually Serious in London took it on, and here we are.’
The plan for the tour is that the band will fill the first half of the concert with a selection of music from earlier phases of the Tom Bancroft Orchestra, drawing on a range of very diverse projects, with Chick Lyall on piano. After the interval, they will be joined by Geri Allen in a set of new music that Tom has written specifically for this commission.
The concerts will also feature specially created visual material from the Yeast team of digital artists, whose credits include working with Courtney Pine, Nitin Sawhney, and the recent Future Sounds of Jazz tour.
The band will gather to record at the end of the tour, but minus their American guest. There are no immediate plans to release the material pending the outcome of the current wide-ranging review of Caber Music’s activities (Tom is the director of the label), but he remains hopeful that their current difficulties will be resolved in positive fashion.
