Only certain parts of Scotland can facilitate snow sports, right? Wrong! If we central belters let the weather dictate the sports that we followed, we‘d probably end up taking part in events like ‘dodge the random summer‘s day shower‘ and the classic ‘don‘t forget your umbrella‘ in late July. Weather here is just damnany unpredictable, and that‘s why the organisers of these two events have decided to do away with the actual snow required
for snow sports altogether.
Midlothian Ski Centre plays host to 20 of the fastest people on plastic on 25 and 26 September. The event attracts the leading skiers in dry slope competition from Scotland, England, Ireland and Wales. It’s the most prestigious dry-slope competition in the UK, with the wheat sorted from the chaff over 150 exhilarating races including relay and slalom events. Any doubt over the demands placed on competitors by a dry slope as opposed to real snow should be dispelled on a close-up view of the slope itself - the largest and steepest in Europe. This is purely a skiing event, however, so if your fantasies incline toward boarding, then perhaps the event in central Glasgow on the same weekend would be better suited to you.
Red Bull Rail Storm is an ambitious venture, attempting to successfully incorporate a large-scale snow sport event into the heart of a city. The relatively small dimensions of George Square prohibit actual slope skiing, but this is all about the boarding. It brings together 24 snowboarders from the USA, mainland Europe and the UK for ten blistering events, with a musical jam (of course) to round things off.
The contestants have to take part in a street jam session, which means negotiating a giant staircase consisting of three rails and two curved boxes. The most fearless and creative boarders on the day then compete in a knockout event, soundtracked by a surprise live act. The line-up for this event is packed with international talent including the UK’s Scott McMorris, Mathieu Crepel from France and Zach Leach from the USA. It‘s a modern snow sport that demands full mental and physical application. Failure to concentrate can lead to some rather messy scenes on the rails.
