It’s no wonder that the average child scorns the suggestion that they should cherish their school days as the happiest of their lives. This idealistic notion ignores the fact that most children experience a degree of bullying at some point in their educational career, and it’s not often an adult is able to speak to them about it on a level they accept as supportive. Perhaps this is why Jacqueline Wilson’s Bad Girls, a story about a young girl’s struggle to deal with a gang of bullies and the challenges she faces when she meets a new friend, has become such a phenomenon. Fans of the book will be pleased to hear that the rainbow tinged exploits of Mandy, Tanya and nasty types Kim, Sarah and Melanie have been adapted by chy Ireland of Polka Theatre into a production arriving at the King’s Theatre. Ireland has adapted other Wilson titles and feels that the writer has an affinity with her readers, often bringing difficult issues to the fore. ‘She touches their lives in a really meaningful way. She doesn’t provide any ready answers, she just says ‘keep at it,”’ says Ireland. While there will

to be jostling for the flag rather than the one who turned up in 2003/04. Surely Rangers will put up a better show than they did last season with new signings Dado Prso and Nacho Novo expected to bag a hatful, and while Jean-Alain Boumsong has been accused of using lbrox as a stepping stone to the Premiership, he will surely bring backbone to a flimsy defence. And the midfield purists are already salivating over the inevitable card-happy encounters between Alex Rae and Neil Lennon.
Over at Parkhead, I-lenri Camara finally became the club’s first signing (albeit on an expensive one-year loan) in a largely frustrating pre-season of rumour, gossip and hearsay, almost none of which came anywhere close to the truth. The question on everyone’s lips is whether Camara will click alongside Chris Sutton to make the Celtic fans forget Henrik whatsisname. This is also a big season for Stilian Petrov (tipped in some quarters to wear the number 7 shirt) while the goalkeeper position will once again be a bone of contention with four gloved men in the race.
The tussle for third place will probably be led by Hearts, while the rejuvenated Aberdeen and Hibs should battle harder for a higher spot. And what of Inverness Caley, who won the biggest fight of their lives in actually taking Partick Thistle’s place in the top flight. Will they have any energy left over to keep themselves afloat?
