PENGUIN BOOK OF GAY SHORT STORIES
Edited by David Leavitt and Mark Mitchell (Penguin £9.99)
It might seem strange to title a book, The NEW Penguin Book of Gay Stories, and include works by DH Lawrence, EM Forster and Noel Coward. But with 36 stories by English and American writers, both gay and straight, versatility is the glue that holds this tome together. It is to this bulky 660 pager’s credit that the contributions are listed chronologically, allowing the reader to dip into their preferred choice of authors, which

include the non-gays Grahame Greene and John Updike. Understandably, pre-war writers such as William Plomer in Local Colour did not delve below the belly button. As a result, romantic love is the dominant emotion contained within them as public school pairing and both requited and unrequited love crop up in the plot lines. The later stories, most of them by young Americans such as Mark Devish, focus on the twin themes of isolation and AIDS, while the explicit prose focuses on areas both below and beyond the belly button. The bad news is that the Tunnel Nightclub in Glasgow has cancelled its short-lived Cabaret Night on Sundays. The good news is that it has rebranded it as a brand new event called POP! Sunday 15 August will see its launch with a special appearance by dance act Shapeshifters who will be regaling us with their hit Lola’s Theme, performed by Cookie. ‘We listened to what our customers wanted, and they told us they didn’t like the name Cabaret so we changed it,’ says Gordon Roberts of Thorn Leisure, the outfit behind the club. For the new night they will be opening the doors half an hour earlier and dropping the entry price.
