RACOUET SPORTS PLAY TENNIS

Go on - you know you want to

You know that feeling when you’re watching Wimbledon. You start getting itchy feet and really missing the feeling of thwacking that fluffy yellow ball and running around the court. How long since you last played? Sometimes it feels like such a fag to get started again (or start for the first time) but when you do it’s so worth it. And it’s not as out of your grasp as you might imagine.

With the light nights and better weather upon us, this is the ideal time to take racquet and ball in hand to try out a sport such as tennis. To make it easier for Glasgow citizens, the City Council has now made it free to book and use its outdoor courts. This is brilliant news if you already have a partner lined up, but for those who

don’t the Tennis Development Department at GCC (0141 287 5576) organises open sessions at the courts in Kelvingrove and Queens Parks. These cost only £3 and are ideal for players who want to brush up their skills in a fairly relaxed environment. However, if the rain decides to return there is also a variety of drop in and booked sessions at Scotstoun Leisure Centre (72 Danes Drive, 0141 959 4000) and Gorbals Leisure Centre (275 Ballater Street, 0141 429 5556), including some for wheelchair users and

people over 40.

In Edinburgh, the East Meadows tennis courts provide a similar outdoors service, with court booking available through Edinburgh Leisure (0131 444 1969) for between £3.50 and £6.50, (although it is free before noon Monday to Friday and after 6pm at weekends). In addition to this, they organise various group coaching sessions and match-play evenings, which are open to all beginners and improvers (call 0766 774529 for details). Craiglockhart Tennis & Sports Centre (177 Colinton Road, 0131 443 0101) also has indoor and outdoor courts for booking and does run social sessions, although they are reduced during the summer months.

But while this kind of set-up is ideal for the occasional player, more committed tennis fans might want to join one of the hundreds of private clubs affiliated to Tennis Scotland (www.tennisscotland.org). These offer a healthy mix of training lessons, social sessions and competitions, as well as an ideal opportunity to meet new tennis buddies. (Rachael Street)

Royal Highland Centre, lngliston. Sat 31 Jul 8: Sun 1 Aug

lf shiny metal, big tyres and exhaust fumes get your heart racing, then Truckfest is a dream come true. On 31 July and 1 August a multitude of petrol-fuelled beasts set up camp at Edinburgh’s Royal Highland Centre, bringing with them a whole host of trade stands, industry exhibitions and family entertainment. Car- crushing action comes from the Hulk monster truck, with stunt displays provided by the Backdraft wheelie fire engine and motorcycle maverick Jason Smyth. On Saturday, watch out for ‘celebs’ Simon Gregson & Suranne Jones (Steve and Karen MacDonald from Corrie), while on Sunday you might catch a glimpse of Keith Duffy or Kerry McFadden strutting their funky stuff. Grrrrrr! (Morag Bruce)
