NED VIZZINI, BE MORE CHILL Edinburgh Book Trust, Edinburgh, Mon June 28.

Put the seemingly innocuous word ‘squip’ into a Google search engine and a surprising number of web pages appear. Each is filled with articles about the squip super computer, a tiny device that can be swallowed like a pill and which instructs the user in how to act ‘cool’. While all these sites look fairly genuine, they are, in fact, the handiwork of 23-year-old author Ned Vtzzini, as part of the publicity campaign for his new book Be More Chill. In this funny and touching portrayal of teenage life, the fictional squip device transforms the existence of super-geek Jeremy Heere, turning him into Mr Popular overnight. While this might seem like every teenager’s dream, it brings with it a whole host of dilemmas, which Jeremy has to sort out on

his own.

Wzinni, who is coming to the Edinburgh Book Trust on June 28 to talk about his creations, knows only too well that this kind of gadget would sell like hot cakes if it was real. ‘If a company came up with a pill that made people cool, they would make billions of dollars. But what you have to realise is that what people think of as cool is already manufactured - companies are spending millions of dollars to research and focus test it. Being a teenager is very much an industry these days.’ It’s this kind of healthy cynicism, coupled with a seemingly boundless imagination, which makes \ftzzini’s story so compelling. And while some may be shocked by his frankness in dealing with issues such as internet pornography and drugs, it is exactly this refusal to skirt around such problems that gives the

book its power. (Rachael Street)
