PUNK/COUNTRY AST 8. RIDE THIS TRAIN Bongo Club. Edinburgh, Thu 8 Jul

For those of you who prefer-a more organic brand of dancing music, this new joint night at the Bongo should more than whet your appetite. Downstairs at FAST, it's punk and garage all the way, while the smaller upstairs bar

rings to the sound of country.

‘We started it because there was nowhere playing the mash of music that we wanted to hear,’ explains Chris Miller, co-tounder and DJ alongside George Taylor. ‘Dirty old guitar fuelled rock’n’roll and gonzo 60$ garage, right through to 70$ punk, no-wave, 80$ hardcore and onwards.’ Named in tribute to Edinburgh’s FAST punk label of the 705, the club has (appropriater enough) booked Paul Research of seminal Embra punks the Scars to bring his guitar and visuals show to the next night. ‘I always found it amazing that I could find these records by the likes of the Scars, Gang of Four and Dead Kennedys and they were on an Edinburgh record label,’ says Miller. ‘Even the packaging

and the attitude was amazing.’

Miller also goes on to detail the ‘patented twin gramophone’ system of Lucky Luke and Cousin Craig upstairs at Ride this Train, and their love of rebel country from Hank Williams to Bonny Prince Billy. Sound like good value to you? You better believe it. (David Pollock)
