Hills is alive

The Stand, Glasgow, Fri 2 Jul; The Stand, Edinburgh, Sun 4 Jul

Last November, Adam Hills wrote an open letter to Jim Davidson, after the Cockney ‘comic’ had opted not to do his hilarious routines before a front row of disabled folks. In his usual considered, measured, really nice way, Hills opted not to utterly destroy Davidson, but to offer some sound advice on how to deal better with the situation should it arise in the future.

Australian Hills has clearly thought about the topic over some time, what with him being an amputee and all; he hates the word ‘disabled’, far preferring the term ‘mutant’. At one of those unruly Late and Live messes at last year’s Fringe, Daniel Kitson actually stole Hill’s fake limb, leaving the audience (and probably our Adam) rolling in the aisles.

But there are some things which aren’t fit for laughter. Such as the fact that he’s been nominated a mere three times for the Perrier. To Hills’ credit, he has shown zilch bitterness towards those who have triumphed above him or even towards the panel that has made a career out of ignoring him when the final decision is made. This year’s assault on the big prize is his sequel to Go You Big Red Fire Engine. Whatever the Perrier panel choose to do, those who continue to help sell out his shows will point to the fact that he’s still hot to trot. (Brian Donaldson)
