Art in the frame PRE-THEATRE
Glasgow Independent Studio provides space for artists to develop their practice and. since 1997. has been holding exhibitions in a project room. As the name suggests. this is a zone for experimentation; a chance for invited artists to explore.
The next show in the space. titled Pre- Theatre. is a case in point. Featuring new painting and drawing by Lynn Hynd. Andrew Kerr and Beck's nominee Hayley Tompkins. the show is Curated by Kevin Hutcheson. who also plans to show his own work. Fittingly. Hutcheson won't be choosing and hanging work by the four. preferring to let the show come together as the artists complete new work.
'l‘m curating it in that I selected the artists that are involved.' he explains. ‘But I won't be selecting certain works or put together a particular type of show. We‘ll all be working together on the show. and see how it comes together.’
As the time to install work draws near. Hutcheson is finding new links between the artists. 'I thought that there were certain edges to the different work that might combine well. but now I‘m seeing the artists domg slightly different things. It's a good space for that. it's more relaxed and informal than a gallery and it gives us a chance to put on a more experimental Show.'
As well as being a chance for gallery-goers to see four artists allowing themselves free reign. the spontaneous approach should offer something of a pause in the hectic spring schedule. 'There are quite a few other shows opening at the same time. whether it‘s the Beck's show coming up. or Craig Mulholland's show at Sorcha Dallas.‘ says Hutcheson. ‘And I think that our informal show — not that it's going to be rough and ready — will fit into that well'
