Strange things are afoot in Clubland, and the effects are being felt across the board from the big brand-name clubs to the smaller DIY nights. The streets are being reclaimed by those with interesting nightlife ideas, and the faceless superclubs now seem anachronistic. Shoogakube is one of a growing number of new Glasgow clubs born out
of a labour of love every month.
The concept for the club came one rainy night waiting in the queue for the Sub Club after a gig. ‘Why should the punter have to shell out so much money to see a great live act and then enjoy a decent after-party?‘ thought MC and part-founder lan Appleby. So he decided, along with a few significant others, to put on a rounded package of live music and club activity. The end result is something rather special. ‘The Soundhaus is a great venue. and there‘s lot of great bands in the city,‘ he says. ‘They‘re usually asked to play in toilets, getting treated quite badly, but we don’t do that. There are resident live acts like Ovalsoul and guests like Figure 5 every month. The music is always really upbeat, electro- house and hip hop. It's like a great gig and then a great after party.’
