EXOTIC THEATRE
BRAIN SALAD BY WAYWARD
The Arches, Glasgow, 27-29 May
The collaboration between Andrew McKinnon and Herman van Baar is back to bear further creative fruit. The critical success of Look at Me, performed at the Arches in Glasgow last April, was sure to spur the theatre-makers onto newer and wider horizons. But just how wild and adventurous this new odyssey will be can be viewed in their new performance, Brain Salad. Scots t director McKinnon and 5'-
Dutch actor van Baar undertook an eight week tour of Turkey and Greece, returning with a provocative and exotic amalgam of pornographic statues, inedible food, religious guilt and a contemporary take on the spiritual journey of St Paul.
The hour-long performance, which packs in improvisation, monologue and film of their journey will, they hope, elicit laughter and empathy in equal measure. While keen to stress the project’s accessibility to all theatre audiences, the pair believe their gay identity is a force in their work.
‘In a sense this was an attempt to be archaeologists of ourselves,’ says Andrew, who lives in Glasgow. ‘The role of religion in both our early lives was fairly strong, and as a result the conditioning that occurs is not unlike that of a hard disk being programmed. Off-loading these early negative concepts of homosexuality is a long and gradual process.’
Amsterdam-based Herman agrees: ‘In addition to being an eccentric travel report, underpinning the project is some serious soul-bearing and intimate monologues.’ Given the contrast between their own backgrounds, how much of a double culture shock was it to be soaking up the experiences of Southern Europe for eight weeks? Andrew recalls: ‘One of the most fascinating aspects of Turkish society is just how male-dominated it is. Women were given very little opportunity to express themselves with us, and yet the guys could interact with each other in a tender and demonstrative but non-sexual way.’
Herman adds: ‘Certain images in our screen show speak for themselves. A section on erotic statues in Greece throws up a fixation for thighs, bums and torsos, while the penis held less of an attraction.’ (Brian McGeachan)
