The Stand, Glasgow, Thu 22 & Fri 23 Apr A funny thing happens when you work your way through
the ‘M’ section on comedy website Chortle. For there, sandwiched in between Bob Monkhouse and Dudley Moore, is stand-up Roger Monkhouse. It can’t be easy spending your time stuck between two dead men, but that’s the way the comedy cookie can occasionally crumble. Dubbed the Godfather of the Last Laugh, his material includes the age-old worry about growing old. You know your time is coming when you need to hold the handles of
the bath to lower yourself into the bubbly depths. That’s when he’s not out scaring Tesco checkout girls with his memorable repartee. One review reckoned he ‘packs in more observation on the human condition in a 20-minute set than a whole lecture on
Jean-Paul Sartre could.’
Frightening looking but soft underneath, he’s not just a very funny man - he’s even run his own clubs, having taken on comedy venues in his adopted Sheffield (he was born in Kingston upon Thames). And he’s not just a very funny man or entrepreneur; he can sing too. Not in a strip yourself to both the psyche and the belly a la Johnny Vegas, but in a comedy crooner way, as he’s been known to knock off versions of ‘That’s Life’ and ‘My Way’. Maybe he’ll work in a rendition of ‘Alive and Kicking’ for his Glasgow fans. Or perhaps he’s got taste. (Brian Donaldson)
